#3Urban Futures & Subjectivities: Identity, Representation and Emancipation
23:00 – 00:30, Konzertsaal
• FAKA (Johannesburg / South Africa), Bottom’s Revenge, Performance feat. DJ Bigger• Artist Talk w/ FAKA, Moderation Ismael OgandoIn Western folklore, Africa has mostly been associated with wilderness, poverty and crisis, with technological and economic backwardness. The African urban spaces and metropolises, like the powerful cultural center of Cairo, modern Capetown or the 21st century sprawl of Lagos, have not attracted similar popular attention until quite recently. They are focal points of massive inner-African migration and hubs of international business and politics, catalysts of cultural transformation, accelerators of globalisation and the conflicts, benefits and pressures that come with it. In how far do the urban sphere and economic and social modernisation open up new individual freedoms and create spaces for self-determined identities? And how do activists navigate between individual empowerment and the politics of identity and representation?
FAKA, a cultural movement established by Fela Gucci and Desire Marea, has come to represent more than the ‘performance art duo’ descriptor that has defined the collective since their inception in 2015. The Johannesburg-based duo focuses its work on issues of the black queer body, sexual fluidity and othered masculine identities. Through this, the pair realised the need for others to express their stories and experiences, and so expanded FAKA into an online platform that voices and promotes young black queer voices in current South Africa’s sociopolitical sphere. They regard their work “as an ongoing performance celebrating the third world aesthetics that often do not have the space to be validated on a large scale in contemporary creative culture.“
